Rooney’s shadow on the pitch is slowly diminishing. He’s still Fabio Capello’s main striker for England, but eventually this may not be the case if he fails to impress against Andorra on Saturday. Is it a question of desire? The former Everton man, who was signed by United for £31 million is or was known for his strength and brute force. However, his confidence looks to be at an all-time low, and many will argue that this is the case for many English players, who have seen their England team on a steady decline in the International level.
But Rooney’s unimpressive performances are as consistent in the Premier League level, as it is in International duty. His lack of ability to enforce himself in the game these days makes him an easy target for United’s lackluster start to the 08/09 campaign. Rooney seems discouraged to take possession. His performances are greatly outdone and overshadowed by his teammates, Tevez and Darren Fletcher in recent weeks.
If Rooney continues his poor display, Capello will likely turn to Jermaine Defoe, who’s looked very good for England and in the EPL, while Darren Bent & Gabriel Agbonlahor are already expected for call-ups.
