Chelsea Outclass City

Manchester City VS Chelsea

City of Manchester Stadium | Final Score: Man. City 1 – 3 Chelsea

Man of the Match: Ricardo Carvalho

Robinho delighted fans with a 13th minute goal. Jô was fouled by Ricardo Carvalho 25 yards from Cech’s goal and in a central position. Robinho struck the free kick over the wall of Chelsea players and passed Cech to take his team up 1-0.

But Carvalho would redeem himself three minutes later, as the Portuguese centerhalf blasted the ball passed Joe Hart from inside the box. From then on, City would create chances off of little one-flick plays, but Robinho’s moves were outdone and were ineffective against a hungry Chelsea side. Chelsea would dominate the play throughout the rest of the first half. Chelsea should have taken the lead in the 27th minute after a wide-open Malouda header hit the crossbar.

There were no changes for either team to start the second half and it didn’t take Chelsea a long time to score a second goal that had been coming for a long while. Frank Lampard scored a classic low-angle shot in the 53rd minute to take Chelsea up 2-1. A chic give-and-go between Anelka and Joe Cole will make it 3-1 for Chelsea. Anelka took a beautiful through-pass from Joe and scored a low-key goal at the bottom right corner passed Joe Hart.

Ricardo Carvalho was the man of the match, next to Frank Lampard after frequent important clearances, which could’ve haunted Chelsea in the end. Wright-Phillips was a magician for the Sky-Blues, while Robinho disappeared for the most part of the game after scoring his team’s only goal. It was only appropriate that the visiting supporters began to chant, “What a waste of money!” towards the City faithful.

John Terry received a straight-red in the 77th minute after a harsh ruling from referee, Mark Halsey. The Chelsea skipper’s red should be appealed, but as it stands, Terry will miss the clash against Manchester United next Sunday.

Liverpool stuns United

Manchester United VS Liverpool

Anfield | Final Score: Liverpool 2 – 1 Man. United

Man of the Match: Javier Mascherano

Carlos Tévez gave United an early lead in the first half. Dimitar Berbatov drew in the defense inside the right side of the box and sent a beautiful pass across, which was met by the inside of Tévez right foot & into the top-right corner of the goal.

But it was the fumble by Edwin van der Sar that drew the match level before the end of the first half. An awkward ball came bouncing between van der Sar & Wes Brown. The United keeper tried to punch the awkward ball away, but instead punched it against the legs of an incoming Wes Brown, who was also trying to clear the ball.

Liverpool put the game away in the 77th minute. A goal coming from Ryan Babel after yet another poor decision made by United inside the box. Ryan Giggs attempted to try to clear the ball, rather than letting Liverpool have the corner. Javier Macherano flicked the ball away from a stubborn Ryan Giggs, who could only watch Dirk Kuyt take the ball away and pass it to wide-open Babel. Babel’s one-time shot did not connect perfectly with Kuyt’s bouncing pass, but it was enough to give Liverpool the win.

Nemanja Vidić was taken off the game after receiving his second yellow card and will miss the match against Chelsea next weekend.
