Meet Michael Mancienne

Chelsea face Middlesbrough at the Riverside on Saturday & Luiz Felipe Scolari could turn to the Chelsea youngsters to make up for his depleted Blues side. Among the new casualties for the Blues are José Bosingwa, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole, John Terry, Alex & Michael Ballack. If John Terry is not deemed fit tomorrow, then the Chelsea manager could turn to Branislav Ivanović, the Serbian centerhalf who made a great first impression on his debut against Aston Villa. 20 year-old, Michael Mancienne could also make his debut for the Blues.

Michael Mancienne, who was picked up by Chelsea when he was only 8 years-old has emerged as one of England’s top young prospects. However, the young centerhalf is yet to make a debut for his team. Mancienne spent the 07/08 campaign on-loan to Championship side, Queens Park Rangers and became a hit to QPR supporters. He is one of the gems of England’s U21 team and is highly-rated by U21 manager, Stuart Pearce.

His hard work could finally pay off this weekend, as he hopes to make his debut for Scolari’s Blues. Even if the 20-year-old does not start, he could still come off the bench to provide some aid for Chelsea’s back-four. Mancienne’s impressive displays have attracted a number of teams, including West Ham United, Portsmouth & Fulham.

feelgood fantasy picks: week 7

We visit Stamford Bridge in (Southwest) London for Week 7 with the Villans hoping to end Chelsea’s long home unbeaten record that spans four years. And if there is a team that could beat Chelsea at home, it is the men from Villa Park. Chelsea are missing depth up front, following another injury setback from Didier Drogba during the team’s midweek Champions League draw to CFR Cluj. Meanwhile, both Gabriel Agbonlahor & John Carew have been declared fit to face the Blues.

Edwin van der Sar is our choice as goalkeeper this weekend, as United look to shut down Paul Ince’s Blackburn side & get their second consecutive win this season. His teammate, Nemanja Vidić also makes our list as one of the central defenders.

Samba heads it in against Newcastle for a 2-1 win

Christopher Samba will look to enforce himself against United. The big Congolese defender was impressive against Newcastle last week and is a handful to defend against in set-pieces. Glen Johnson & Gareth Bale complete our back-four for this week. Two fullbacks, who are still looking to ignite for their teams this season.

Gerrard was Mr. 100 vs PSV during midweek

Two Liverpool players lead our midfield this week. Steven Gerrard scored his 100th goal for his club against PSV Eindhoven in midweek and will look to add more against Manchester City. And with the Reds on the edge of hitting their 1000th EPL goal (currently 999 goals), many will look to the Kop skipper to have that honor.

Javier Mascherano was rested this week and should be fit to play against Manchester City after missing the last three games. Geovanni, the former Manchester City man will look to sink an already sinking Tottenham ship after last week’s canonball shot against Arsenal. Antonio Valencia completes our midfield for this week.

Owen will look to put a smile on Toon supporters

If Tottenham are close to being sunk, then Newcastle might just as well be a part of that wreckage. Everton will be desperate to get back in the winning column after their defeat in the Merseyside derby. Michael Owen and his 3 goals this season have all come in vain, but the English marksman will do all he can to be Toon’s saviour & hopefully give his supporters a victory against the Toffees. Jermaine Defoe is having a superb season and should continue his hot streak against Stoke on Sunday.

Michel Platini – The Messiah of Football

This weekend UEFA President Michel Platini had many things to tell us on the future of our beloved game of football. According to recent investigations made by UEFA, one of the main problems causing the dramatic differences of quality between rich and poor clubs, is that the poorer clubs cannot manage debt as well as the richer ones.

But there is a wider question, as to whether people can just play the free market, UEFA is concerned first and foremost about the spirit of the game and balance of competition.

According to recent Club releases, Chelsea and Manchester United owe a record of over 1.2 billion Euros due to excessive loans. Platini stated his awareness that rich and poor clubs will always exist, but the taking in of debt is what causes most of the disadvantages between the world’s various leagues. He has only allowed the recent buying of Manchester City by a foreign investor, as it was the only way to save the club from going bankrupt. Yet some clubs could not share the same fate, as last year Scotland’s Gretna FC seized to exist due to the excessive loans taken just to remain in competition with the Old Firm (Celtic and Rangers).

During his term, Platini is expected to implement other rules and restrictions to the richer clubs, showing a President capable to work for the “good of the game.”

feelgood Top Five (Week 6)

Week 6 saw Chelsea & Liverpool take back the top of standings. Liverpool beat out Everton at Goodison Park in the Merseyside derby. United took advantage of some poor decisions to get themselves back on track against Bolton. And Hull City look like the new Wigan, as they upset the Gunners to take 6th place in the Premiership.

#5 – Jermaine Defoe

Jermaine Defoe, the ex-Tottenham man, sunk his former team with a 33rd minute penalty. Jermaine Jenas was unlucky to concede the penalty as the ball accidentally hit his arm in the box. Defoe beat Heurelho Gomes with a bottom-left-corner strike to put his team up 1-0.

#4 – José Bosingwa

It was Avram Grant’s last signing, José Bosingwa, that became the difference-maker in Chelsea’s victory over Stoke City. The right-fullback, who had began the attack primarily, made great use of a chip pass by Lampard into the box. Bosingwa struck the ball with his right foot, beating both Thomas Sørensen and defender, Andy Griffin for his first goal as a Blue. It was also Bosingwa, who set-up Anelka in the end to make it 2-0.

#3 – Scott Carson

Scott Carson was the man of the match for West Brom on Saturday after a fantastic display to earn his team a 1-0 victory & a full three points. And with David James letting in ten goals in his last 3 games for Portsmouth, Carson’s eye-catching display on Saturday could earn him a starting spot for Fabio Capello’s England squad.

#2 – Fernando Torres

El Niño scored twice at Goodison Park to win the Merseyside Derby. Two unbeatable strikes in the in the 58th & 62nd minute was enough to put his team through and back at the top of the table.

#1 – Geovanni

The former Manchester City player hit a lightning strike from thirty yards out to tie the game up 1-1. But it would be his goal that turned the game around for the Tigers, as five minutes later Daniel Cousin scored the match-winner to upset the Gunners.

feelgood headlines: “Help The Aged Gunners” (UK Sun)

It is always entertaining to check up on the UK Sun for their absurd headlines. The article captioned Arsenal’s poor performance against Hull this afternoon within the first sentence: “Arsenal’s OAPs will be resting on their Zimmer frames after being given the runaround by Hull.

More snippets from the article:

Hull boss Phil Brown said: “It’s one of my greatest results.”

Brown joked it was a day to celebrate as Hull reached 11 points.

He added: “We’ve got the same number of points as Derby (achieved in all of last season) with 32 games left, so it’s a fantastic day.”
